Parent Support and Education
Parent SupportBecoming a parent introduces a person to a whole new world, with its own language, rules, schedule, and paraphernalia. If by chance your child has special needs, the learning curve for you is enormous! Not only do you have to learn to be a parent, you feel the need to become a medical expert overnight just to understand the barrage of information that is coming at you. Never fear – we are here to help. We provide parent group sessions for the parents and primary caregivers of the children that we serve. Parents have an opportunity to particpate in both small and large group settings. The the small group setting, parents share experiences and gain emotional support as they discuss the challenges that they face as parents of children with special needs. The large group setting provides an opportunity for families to learn about subjects of general interest such as financial planning, choosing a pediatrician and other health topics.
Special Kids and Families is pleased to provide Transition and Advocacy Training through parent education & empowerment. As children approach school age, new opportunities (and sometimes obstacles) are presented. Our parent support group provides advocacy and information on resources to help prepare families for the transition from early intervention to public or private school. |
